In the West, they don't wait until May 21st. Registration for DIWASS in Germany has already begun
DIWASS registration in Germany is already underway, even though the system officially comes into effect on 21 May 2026. German authorities have launched the eREG-D tool, which allows companies to begin the registration process in advance. This is a clear signal to the market – some countries – including Poland – do not intend to wait until the last minute.

What is the eREG-D system?
Germany has opted for a pragmatic approach to implementing the new regulations. Instead of waiting for the official start of DIWASS, they have launched their own tool to support the registration process. The eREG-D system operates within the ZKS-Abfall infrastructure and is already available to businesses.
Crucially, this solution is not a conceptual test. Companies can actually submit applications and begin the process of preparing to operate within the new system. This allows the administration to spread the workload over time, and entrepreneurs can avoid a backlog of formalities just before May 2026.
Registration of DIWASS in Germany – how does it look in practice?
The registration process is based on two key elements. Firstly, the entrepreneur submits an application for Location registration, which is the registration of the entity or location. Secondly, it must undergo the procedure User Authorisation, which assigns specific users to organisations.
The findings are then passed on to the relevant administrative bodies at the state level. It is these bodies that verify and approve the data. In practice, this means that the speed of the procedure can vary depending on the region.
At the same time, the entire process takes place electronically. This allows entrepreneurs to act faster and without the need to submit paper documentation.
What does this mean for companies transporting waste?
Germany's actions indicate a clear direction of change. The DIWASS system will not be implemented simultaneously and in an identical manner in all countries. Some states are starting earlier and building their own transitional solutions.
On the one hand, this gives businesses more time. On the other hand, however, it increases the risk of erroneous assumptions that „there is still time”. In practice, companies working with German partners may be forced to adapt to the new requirements earlier.
Furthermore, a lack of timely registration can lead to real operational problems. In extreme cases, a company may be unable to legally carry out cross-border transports.
Poland won't wait until the last minute either.
Germany has already started registration and clearly shows the direction the entire DIWASS system is heading. Poland is not far behind. According to current information, the registration option will be available soon 21st April, which is one month before the mandatory start of the system.
This means that companies involved in the cross-border transport of waste should start preparing now. On the one hand, this offers a tangible organisational advantage. On the other hand, however, it reduces the risk of errors and delays at a crucial time.
This is why it's not worth waiting until May. Registration, access configuration, and tidying up roles in the system take time. The sooner a company goes through this process, the more efficiently it will adopt the new operating model.
In short — Germany is already acting, Poland will follow suit shortly. Now everything depends on whether your company will be ready.
